- You guys are getting confused. VT 4.0 is the one being delayed.
-
- We just got a LW 3.5 upgrade. NewTek announced that LW was immediately
- unbundled
- for the AMIGA, and _PLANNED_ for other platforms. They haven't missed their
- projected deadline for the OTHER platforms yet. They HAVE missed their
- deadlines
- for the VT Flyer. This makes the LW schedule and the VTF schedule almost in
- sync, but this is pure coincidence from what I can tell. If the VTF
- schedule slips again, then I don't expect the LW schedule to slip. LW is
- now unbundled, and can ship independently even though it is less
- convenient.
-
- LW 4.0 and VT 4.0 will probably both be on the same CD from what I hear,
- but that is from convenience. It makes more sense to ship the whole wad at
- ONE time.
- Even if the VT4.0 software is of no use to non-Amiga users it is easier and
- cheaper to stamp one CD with it than one with and one without. If the VTF
- software isn't ready when LW 4.0 is ready to ship, I would expect LW to
- ship
- due to the pent up demand from non-Amiga platforms ( not to mention
- NewTek's
- desire for CA$H ;-).
-
- The big hold up with VT4.0 is because it will also have the VT Flyer
- software on it. The VTF has the rest of the VT software all tangled up.
- Apparently NewTek can no longer separate the two. So when one product is
- ready to ship it has to wait for the other.
-
- If (VT == ready) && (VTF == ready) then they can ship. ;-)
-
- Talk about people with a long wait. The poor Tpaint users have been waiting
- for a long time. First it was neglected in favor of the CG rewrite, then it
- was being rewritten, and then the VTF came along. Thus we are still using
- Tpaint 1.0 folks!
-
- Bottom line is that I don't think NewTek is playing favorites among
- platforms. I think they are battling product schedules. The cross platform
- support just happens to be in there too due to the timing of the C=
- collapse, and the
- desire and pressure(lightrave) to unbundle Lightwave.
-
- Less than six months from LW3.5 to LW4.0 doesn't seem that unreasonable to
- me, and quite phenomenal considering the port to other platforms. I don't
- expect much out of LW4.0 other than patches and tweaks. The influx of cash
- from LW4.0 on other platforms should make it possible to bring more to bear
- on new features for LWng. It is hard, but I think LWng will be well worth
- the wait ;-)
-
- For those who don't know: I just made up LWng, ;-) since I don't know how
- they will number it.
-
- The SALEs Volume of LW4.0 to Amiga users will determine the fate of support
- for Amigas for the next release. Then the Sales volume of that will
- determine
- the support for the next release, and so on until the sales don't warrant
- continued support JUST AS IT DID BEFORE unbundling of Lightwave! The big
- difference now is that: Also at each step the the needs and sales volumes
- of other platforms will grow until they may far over shadow the volume of
- Amigas. At THAT point NewTek's loyalty to the Amiga community will be
- tested.
-
- As with ANY product the best way to keep support coming is to buy the
- upgrades!
-
- So far I'd have to say I've gotten pretty darn good return on my
- investment in NewTek products.
